Somewhere along the way, I think we started believing that a treat had to be something bad for us. Something we should feel guilty about. Something we'd promise ourselves we'd make up for tomorrow.
And I can't help wondering...
When did we decide that? Because if you really think about it, a treat should leave you feeling better. Not just for the thirty seconds you're eating it, but afterwards too.
That's one of the reasons Proper Nom exists. Not because I wanted to make "healthy snacks." But because I got curious. About flavour, about taking ingredients that are often overlooked - a Medjool date, a handful of seeds, rich cacao, roasted nuts - and asking,
"What else could this become?"

Because something magical happens when you stop looking at real food as something you should eat, and start treating it as something worth getting excited about.
The goal has never been to copy chocolate, or cake, or sweets. They're already brilliant at being themselves. The goal is to create something that stands confidently on its own. Something deeply satisfying. Something that nourishes you and feels wildly indulgent at the same time.
For me, that's the real treat. Not choosing between flavour and nourishment and discovering that you don't have to.
One of the biggest surprises for me has been how quietly my relationship with food has changed.
I haven't made rules. I haven't banned anything. I haven't reached a point where I never fancy cake or ice-cream. I still love those things.
But somewhere along the way, my excitement shifted. I found myself looking forward to different things. The excitement of trying a new ingredient, roasting seeds and seeing how the flavour changes. Finding a combination that makes me stop mid-bite because I wasn't expecting it to taste that good.
I didn't lose the joy of food - I found more places to experience it.
The more I've learnt about ingredients, the more fascinated I've become. Not because I'm trying to build the perfect diet. Because I genuinely can't believe what nature has already created.
A fruit that tastes like caramel.
Seeds packed with incredible nutrients.
Cacao that's rich, complex and deeply satisfying.
It feels like every ingredient has its own story waiting to be discovered, and somehow, the more I learn, the more I want to play.
Proper Nom isn't about replacing your favourite foods or chasing perfection. It's about being reminded just how exciting real food can actually be.

How much creativity there is hiding inside ordinary ingredients, and how food can satisfy us on so many levels.
Physically, of course.
But emotionally too.
Creatively.
Socially.
Sometimes the simple act of making something beautiful for yourself can become a quiet reminder that you're worth the effort. I don't think we talk about that enough.
I still get so excited every time I discover a new flavour combination. Or when someone takes a bite of a Date Night for the first time and their face lights up.
It's never really been about making a snack. It's about sharing that feeling.
That little moment where you stop and think, "I didn't know real food could taste like this."
And perhaps that's where the adventure really begins.
